Norway via ferrata 2024

Did you know that Norwegian adventure parks are natural and have fjord views?

The trip has taken place. Check out upcoming rock trips HERE.

Now you know! Via ferrataIron roads, or “iron roads” in Estonian, have been used throughout history to cross mountains more directly, but also to build more complex mountain structures. On our own trip, however, we will follow trails built for the purpose of adventure sports, where adrenaline and self-transcendence become the key words. In contrast, we can enjoy the generally grounding environment typical of small Norwegian towns and the views of the summer fjords from both above and below.

This tour is for those looking for a summer vacation that doesn't lack that magical "something." If cliffs and rock climbing sound exciting to you, the mention of Norway makes your ears perk up, and you're looking for a well-deserved vacation, then read on!

The first stop takes place Romsdalsfjord Romsdalsstigen is via ferrata, marked with the letter D on the AF difficulty scale, which is the third most difficult. No challenge awaits! Preparation and safety are of course paramount - the adventure train will thoroughly inspect via ferrata, the basics of climbing and finds adventurous alternatives if necessary.

We will spend the next two days Loenis, where there are 3 alternative trails that we can choose between as a group. For those who wish, there is a top (Hoven, 1011 m) zip line or two and of course breathtaking views for all. Loen is probably one of the most popular destinations on the trip, where in addition to climbers we can see BASE jumpers and paragliders gliding above the sky.

Hornelen (860 m) is the highest sea cliff in Norway and supposedly in Europe. It is possible to climb or hike to the top. There are also two alternatives on this trail - challenging and even more challenging. But by then, it is already in the palm of your hand! Otherwise, it is a secluded and quiet fjord, where via ferrata, The activity only started a year ago. Here we will talk more about the culture and history, for which the region is also known.

In addition to the destinations themselves, the drive in between offers adventure and visual wonder. We pass through tunnels, wave at glaciers, and cross rolling fjords.

Schedule and activities

Day 1 - Arrival in the fjord town of Ålesund and meeting your adventure companions!

The trip will most likely start at Tallinn Airport and with a stopover in Oslo, we will arrive in Ålesund, where your adventure train will be waiting for you. Upon arrival, we will set up camp at a local campsite, from where we will be fresh in the morning for the first day of climbing.

Day 2 - Romsdalsstigen vf!

After a refreshing breakfast and perhaps a dip in the fjord, we drive for a beautiful 1,5 hours to our first via ferrata, to the beginning of the trail. Depending on the experience and wishes of the participants, we will choose either a shorter introductory trail or a longer one, reaching 715 m above sea level, to start our hike. Once back down, we will refresh ourselves with a meal and a night at a nearby campsite.

  • Adventure duration: approx. 7 hours

Day 3 - New day, new view!

We spend a peaceful morning together, then head towards Loen. There we will have an afternoon climbing session and a slightly more leisurely afternoon, when we will listen to our body's condition and decide on a plan for the coming days. We will spend the night at a campsite near the town.

  • Adventure duration: approx. 6 hours

Day 4 - Calm and wise

Based on the feelings of the previous day, we choose today's activity. In any case, another beautiful day in the fjords awaits us, whether it's a drive to a glacial lake with blue waters or a more challenging via ferrata, After a refreshing dinner, we spend the night again at a familiar campsite.

  • Adventure duration: approx. 8 hours

Day 5 - Europe's highest sea cliff!

The drive to the coast takes about 3 hours. We check our health again and, if our body says “yes”, we spend the second half of the day once again hanging out over the fjord. This time, the accommodation is located a ferry ride away, at the seaside campsite of Maløy.

  • Adventure duration: approx. 6 hours

Day 6 - Culture and Restitution

That day we will take short trips here and there, splash around in the fjord waters, and discover the defensive structures built by the Germans, which cover almost the entire Norwegian coast.

Day 7 - Final effort

There are two alternatives today. Since Hornelen's first via ferrata, The trail doesn't take us to the very top of the mountain, but now there is an opportunity to do so. For a small additional fee, it is possible to reach the top by climbing - which is a nice physical and mental challenge, as the trail is partly of difficulty level E. The rest of us can venture up the hiking trail, which reaches the same peak, from where we will find our way back home as a group.

  • Adventure duration: 8-9 hours

Day 8 - On the way home

Ålesund is now a 4,5 hour drive away. At this point, we review our return flight plans and calculate how much time we can spend enjoying the morning and the drive.

NB! There may be minor changes to the schedule and planned activities - for example, due to weather and conditions or the wishes of passengers.

Don't worry, let's do it!

I've never been to a climbing gym before. Can I still do it?!

Via ferrata is like an introduction to climbing, so of course! However, to enhance your own experience, it is recommended to train your arm strength before traveling and it would be good if your body is used to longer physical exertion/effort. It is also important to prepare your mind for a possible fear of heights, in which case, of course, the adventure train and the rest of the group will be your support!

But I don't have the necessary equipment, I'm not going to buy it for just one trip!

You'll have to spend a little money, but not much. Hiking and climbing equipment is available at a very reasonable price. to lend and of course borrow from friends. In addition, we are not via ferrata, The itinerary is very demanding, with a bed in the huts and only your own sleeping bag or bed clothes required. It is quite warm in Norway in June, but a decent raincoat and a warm sweater are strongly recommended - once the sun has set, the evening often takes on a special charm.

Will I survive?

It's an extreme sport/hobby, but you shouldn't be too afraid here. Of course, there are certain dangers when climbing and you have to take that into account, but at the same time, you could get hit by a bus while walking across the street tomorrow. The most important thing for the group leader is to ensure the safety of the participants - to do this, we learn and use correct techniques and turn around if the weather/fear gets too crazy. The point is still to have an enjoyable experience. ;)

Okay, I registered. Now what?

Well, theoretically you could vanish into thin air and appear on a plane, but then you risk discovering “oops, I have the wrong shoes and what is this carabiner?” on the spot. It can happen, but we warmly recommend participating in preparatory events - it's part of the fun. We organize preparatory hiking trainings, give advice on suitable insurance and equipment, where to rent cheaply, what to train for, etc. It is precisely bouldering and rope climbing that will come in handy on this trip. We will definitely review the equipment you have collected just before the start of the trip and send reminders about important things.

Travel documents and footnotes

  • The participant is responsible for the validity and condition of their travel documents. For this trip you will need:

    • ID card/passport;

    • for a mountain hike / via ferrata,'s suitable sports insurance (read more on the FAQ page). A suitable sports insurance policy must be carried and is a prerequisite for participating in the mountain hike;

    • travel insurance.

  • Plan your trip early and start exercising for it. It would be a shame if exciting adventures were to be missed due to lack of time. It's also a good motivation to get in shape. ;)

  • Not all trails are guaranteed to be covered. As you might expect, weather is king when it comes to outdoor adventures. However, Norway is full of great alternatives, no matter where we head!

  • Although at the end of the day everyone is still responsible for their own actions and consequences, we do our best to mitigate the risks associated with climbing. As a result, the group leader has the right to make ongoing decisions about the competence of the participants, the suitability of their equipment, physical/mental capacity, etc. and, if necessary, for example, to prohibit participation on a climbing day if it endangers the health of the group or the participant themselves. Hopefully, of course, there will be no need for this.
