The ABCs of moving on a glacier

Mountaineering crash course: the ABCs of glacier travel

PLACES ARE FULL!

Taking advantage of the ideal high mountain weather conditions created by the weather forecast, we gather our crampons, picks, and ropes and practice moving on glaciers. So that we can be braver on our summer mountain trip!

This training is intended for anyone who plans to set foot on glacial peaks in the near future, but has no previous experience with technical mountaineering. Whether you plan to conquer the mountains as part of a group trip or independently - proper technical knowledge and skills are essential for moving safely on glaciers.

The training takes place On the slopes of Kassitoome on Toomemägi in TartuDuring the 6-hour training, we will practice the most important basic skills for moving on glaciers:

  • rope walking with cats and a pickaxe

  • self-braking with a pickaxe, or self-arrest

  • rescuing someone who has fallen from a crevasse

In addition, there is an opportunity to ask an experienced mountaineering guide for advice on equipment, mountains, and other mountaineering-related matters, and to receive additional information about upcoming mountain trips in the summer.

Throughout the training, you can refresh yourself with hot tea, and for lunch we will prepare MEKI dry food packages.

What equipment is needed?

Back-to-back

The weather can be cold, so dress warmly and windproof. Clothing should be layered, as it is warm when moving but cold when waiting - this way you can add or remove layers as you go. Ideally, the layers should be distributed as follows:

  1. warm clothes

  2. fleece or a lighter jacket with insulation (e.g. a down jacket)

  3. windproof and waterproof jacket or shell jacket.

Warm underwear and windproof pants (can also be shell pants or alpine ski pants). Hiking boots or other stiff winter boots are suitable for footwear so that the straps of the boots can be pulled tightly around the foot. Sufficiently warm socks inside the boots. Regular work gloves or mittens and thicker extra gloves for waiting breaks.

Climbing equipment

We provide all technical climbing equipment for this training. Personal equipment includes crampons, climbing harness, helmet, and pickaxe. However, if you have your own equipment, we highly recommend that you do so. Learning to know and use your equipment is very important for effective climbing!

In addition, we use a large amount of special equipment shared by the group - these are also Elamus+ already organized on site by the team. Ropes, carabiners, ice drills, slings, rappels and other auxiliary equipment.

Food and drink

Each participant will receive a dry food package for lunch. Other snacks of your choice or if you do not want a food package - bring your own. Hot water and tea will also be available.

NB! Please bring your own spoon and cup.We generally eat packaged food straight from the package, so a bowl is not needed, but a spoon and a mug or thermos could be helpful.
