Hiking in Sweden 2022

Kungsleden - The King of All Trails

Have you been to Estonian hiking trails and the bogs are no longer a challenge? Great, because this summer we're going to Sweden to greet the reindeer!

The Kungsleden Trail runs through some of Sweden's most beautiful mountain scenery and offers more than 400 kilometers of hiking adventure for both first-time hikers and seasoned mountain veterans. It is one of the world's most famous hiking trails, and the section between Abisko and Nikkaluokta is the most traveled trail in all of Sweden. It is this same 105 km stretch from Abisko to Nikkaluokta that we will also explore. If all goes according to plan, we will also visit Sweden's highest peak, Kebnekaise (2096 m).

This hike is suitable for both beginners and those who have hiked before and want to challenge themselves. We will cover a 105 km stretch that offers snowy peaks (yes, even in summer, because we are going all the way north!), beautiful mountain views, streams and we will most likely see reindeer. Our hiking trip will be spiced up by staying in tents and we will cook most of our own meals (with the help of the Tactical Foodpack).

Added bonus – social distancing has never been easier.

Schedule and activities

Day 1

We will depart from Tallinn at 10.30:9 towards the port. So, anyone who didn't have time to pack their things the night before will still have time to save something in the morning - long-term hiking practice has shown that sleeping on the last night is not worth considering. Then a boat trip, a quick power nap and then we are already in Helsinki, from where we will begin a ca. XNUMX-hour drive to Kem, near the Swedish border. We will spend the night in a hotel.

Day 2

The next morning we wake up at 7, have breakfast at the hotel and continue our journey to Abisko. It will take us about 6 more hours to get there. When we reach Abisko, we have lunch and immediately start our hike. We only have to cover 7 km. By the end of the second day we reach Abisko National Park. We set up our tents and have dinner.

Day 3

We wake up at 7, have breakfast, pack our things and set off. Today our goal is to walk 17 km and reach Alesjaure. There we can replenish our food supplies and have a proper dinner. Then we move a little further and look for a suitable place to camp.

Day 4

LAUNDRY DAY! Today is the longest day ahead of us - we have to walk 23 km, part of it uphill. However, we can reward ourselves in the evening with a hot (hopefully) shower and a soft bed! We will prepare lunch and breakfast ourselves and have dinner in Sälka.

Day 5

We start the day with breakfast at Sälka Station, where we stayed overnight. Then we pack our things and set off. Our destination is Singi, which is a 12 km walk. If there is a place on the way where we can eat, we will have lunch there; if not, we will eat our own food. In the evening, we will look for a good place to pitch our tents, prepare dinner and rest for the next day.

Day 6

Needless to say, we start the morning by preparing breakfast and packing our things. We end the day at Kebnekaise, the highest peak in Sweden. The distance we have to cover is 14 km.

Day 7 - 8

We hope for good weather and go to the top of Kebnekaise (2096 m). However, we may encounter very cold temperatures at the top, so we should definitely dress warmly! It takes about 5 hours to reach the top, so after coming down we will spend the night in the same place as the previous night. If the weather is not good and it is not possible to climb to the top, we have one day left. So we will rest, look around the area and hope for good weather again the next day. If we still fail to reach the top, we will move on.

Day 9

Today we have the final push, as we have to walk 18 km and reach Nikkaluito by evening. During the day we stop at LapDonald's, where we can reward ourselves with a reindeer burger and creamy waffles. However, our hike doesn't end there, as in the evening we will once again look for a camping spot and eat the best bits of Tactical Foodpack.

Day 10

You could say that the last day is almost a day of rest, because we only have to cover 1 km. We can also sleep as long as our hearts desire that morning. Then we need to get to Kiruna for the 6 o'clock train, which will take us back to Abisko. In Abisko we will have lunch and start the drive back to Helsinki. Today we have planned a XNUMX-hour drive, which we will end in Hapranda, on the Swedish-Finnish border, where we will stay overnight in a hostel. Another good news is that we can do laundry again!

Day 11

There are still about 10 hours left to sail. If we still have time and energy, we can look around Helsinki in the evening before the ship departs, and then we will sail towards Tallinn - home, dear home.

NB! There may be minor changes to the schedule and planned activities - for example, due to weather and conditions or passenger requests.
