Iceland hiking trip 2027
Journey to the edge of the world!
A hiking trip in Iceland will take you to the end of the world, far from civilization, to the Westfjords. There is a high probability of encountering arctic foxes in the tundra landscape there, and puffins on the cliffs by the shore. We will hike on the Hornstrandir Peninsula – a place where there is no road and can only be reached by boat. On the hike, we will only pass a few small villages, which are also only inhabited in the summer. This hike is a good option for those looking for wilder and more remote trails.
July is the warmest and driest month in Iceland. The temperature during the day is 13°C to 15°C, sometimes even 20°C, and at night it is about 9°C. There is up to 21 hours of daylight per day!
We stay in hostels in the cities and in our own tents during the hike. We carry all our equipment in a backpack during the hike.

Schedule and activities
DAY 1: Arrival, CITY DAY IN REYKJAVIK
Arrival on Friday, July 2. We will get to know Reykjavik. Overnight stay in a hostel in Reykjavik.
DAY 2: GOLDEN CIRCLE
We will explore the sights of Iceland's Golden Circle: Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall that gave the Golden Circle its name), Haukadalur Geysers and Reykjadalur Hot Spring (you can swim there!). Overnight stay in a hostel in Reykjavik.
DAY 3: Westfjords
We will travel to the Westfjords by rental bus. Along the way, we will pass by picturesque views, hot springs, the reddish-sand beach of Rauðisandur, the puffin haven of Látrabjarg, and the magnificent waterfall of Dynjandi. We will arrive in Ísafjörður in the evening. We will spend the night in a hostel.
DAY 4: THE HIKING BEGINS! Hesteyri - Látrar
boat ride + 21 km hiking
After breakfast in Ísafjörður, we take a boat across the bay to Hesteyr. There is also the trail's only and last sign of civilization - the café at the edge of the world. Next, we are in the Hornstrandir nature reserve, where there are no roads or food places - only a few farms. Permanent settlement in this corner of Iceland was interrupted in the 1950s. However, there is a high probability of encountering arctic foxes. We hike through the village of Sæból to the Látrar campsite.
DAY 5: Látrar - Hlöðuvík
22 km of hiking
This day we will hike in the northernmost part of the Westfjords, climbing between mountains about 500m high. We will also pass Lake Fljótavatn. In the evening we will reach the Hlöðuvík campsite.
DAY 6: Hlöðuvík - InnstidaluR
16 km of hiking
From Hlöðuvík, the journey continues a little further away from the ocean, but from Höfn onwards along the coast to the Innstidalur campsite.
Day 7: InnstidaluR - HORNBJARG - Veiðileysufjörður
21 km of hiking
We will hike to Hornbjarg first thing in the morning. Hornbjarg is one of the coolest curved rock formations on the north coast of the Westfjords. In the evening we will head south overland to Veiðileysufjörður.
Day 8: WHALE WATCHING
In the morning we take a boat from Veiðileysufjörður to Ísafjörður. Since whales can be seen on the north coast, we go on a whale watching trip. We may encounter humpback whales and minke whales. We celebrate the end of the trip at the Ísafjörður fish restaurant! Overnight stay at a hostel in Ísafjörður.
DAY 9: Snæfellsnes Peninsula
We will travel back towards Reykjavík – with a detour to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to see Snæfellsjökull National Park and Kirkjufell. Overnight in a hostel in Reykjavík.
Day 10: Back HOME!
City day in Reykjavik, those who wish can visit the Blue Lagoon spa. We fly back home.
NB! There may be minor changes to the schedule and planned activities - for example, due to weather and conditions or passenger requests.

Don't worry, let's do it!
Is this hike suitable for me?
This is an active holiday that is affordable for any adventurer with an active lifestyle. What you need to keep in mind is that when hiking on Hornstrandir, you are 4 days away from civilization, and it is difficult to get back from there early. You must be prepared to carry 4 days of hiking equipment and food with you.
But I don't have any hiking gear, who can afford to buy it?!
Borrow hiking equipment from friends, acquaintances, adventure guides, or hiking companies. You can also find pretty good stuff for a reasonable price at Matkasporti, Decathlon, or fb marketplace. The most important thing is that your shoes and backpack are comfortable.
Okay, I registered. Now what?
To make the hike more enjoyable, we recommend participating in our preparatory events before the trip - it's also part of the fun. Elamus+ also organizes preparatory hiking training and, if desired, we can provide advice on suitable insurance and equipment, etc.
