Basic mountaineering training #2

Rope climbing and crevasse rescue

Summer mountain peaks are already looming on the horizon! It's worth packing some basic skills for your trip, which is the best insurance for a happy summit with your companions.Selfieto get there and also to get back down safely.

During this one-day training in the beautiful nature of Estonia, we will focus on the practical skills needed to cross a glacier and navigate less technical slopes.:

  • Movement as a tightrope walk,

  • Rescuing a companion who fell into an ice crevasse,

  • Practical safety methods in the mountains,

  • River crossing using a taut rope.

Short walks keep your mind fresh, and give you the opportunity to practice packing your equipment properly.

The training is also open to absolute beginners who have no experience, but basic knowledge of mountaineering, mountain hiking experience and/or previous training (e.g. Basic Mountaineering Training #1 or similar training for beginners) will be beneficial. If you have already learned the techniques covered, but need to be reminded of them, you are also welcome to participate in the training.

Training plan and topics

The aim of the training is to learn the basic skills needed for your first summit. We will practice safe and effective movement as a rope team on both a glacier and a less technical slope - situations that occur on many mountains suitable for a first summit. We will also learn how to rescue a companion who has fallen into an ice crevasse. The mind will be kept fresh by moving in the beautiful Estonian nature, where we will also have to cross a river. The exercises are combined with a short hike to simulate a realistic day in the mountains. The route is approximately 4-8 km long.

The training will also provide an overview of the basic equipment needed to cross a glacier and rope a mountain route.

TOPICS

We will gather at approximately 9.45:XNUMX a.m. At the Valgemetsa railway station In Põlva County, so that we can start with the topics at 10.00:XNUMX.

  1. Arrival and introduction

  2. Rigging and rope management (including cleaning the rope around the body)

  3. Moving as a group

  4. Construction of a simpler security station

  5. Abseiling on a low-tech slope

  6. River crossing on a tightrope

  7. Pulling a companion out of an ice crevasse using a block system

  8. Belaying on a low-tech slope

Short walks and lunch breaks can also be included between different exercises.

Previous knowledge of basic knots (figure eight, middleman, prusik, UIAA knot) is helpful, but if necessary, we will of course help you learn and remember the knots.

The training ends at approximately 19.00:XNUMX PM.

Equipment

CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR

The training takes place in the beautiful Estonian summer - you should wear hiking clothing appropriate for the weather. It is recommended to wear long pants and other clothing should be considered moderate physical activity and changeable weather. During the explanation of the exercises and the lunch break, we will be quite still, so it is wise to bring a warm jacket or similar (if the Estonian summer has not yet reached its peak). We recommend wearing light hiking shoes with good grip soles.

A "top bag" - a lightweight 15-45L backpack - is enough to carry equipment and food and drinks. In addition to comfort, you need to consider that things will not fall out of the bag if you have to go uphill.

FOOD AND DRINK

Bring a bottle(s) of water, at least 2 liters, but more in hot weather.

We will sit down during the lunch break, but the food should be something that does not require much cooking. A dehydrated food package (and, for example, warm water in a thermos so that you do not have to boil water) or a hearty ready-made meal are suitable. Since the day is long, it is also worth taking some bars or other snacks that can be eaten on the go.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

You will need a personal climbing harness and three locking carabiners for the training. If you don't have them, we can provide them. A helmet is not required for the training.

However, if you have more relevant special equipment (e.g. self-protection, rappel device, rappelling ropes, slings), you can also bring them with you.

We will provide the necessary ropes, safety station materials, rappelling ropes, pulleys, etc. for the training.
